What is Circumcision?

Circumcision is a process in which a layer of skin known as the foreskin is removed from the tip of the human penis (known as glans penis). The foreskin is cut open. There is a removal of any adhesions. And the foreskin is then separated from the glans.

The procedure is most often performed on a newborn baby. As some cultures require to do so. Whereas in other places, this practice takes place in adulthood.

The major health organizations of the world do not have any specific recommendations regarding circumcision.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the benefits of circumcision in male babies are greater than the risks. However, the AAP does not recommend routine circumcision for all newborns. And the parents can make the decision.

According to recent estimates, circumcision is a common practice in the United States, the Middle East, and parts of Africa. But it is less common in Europe and some other countries.

High or Low Circumcision

Circumcision, as stated above, is a procedure in which we remove a part of the foreskin. The remaining part of the foreskin then fuses with the skin of the shaft. And allowed to heal. This fusion point later becomes the permanent scar line.

A high circumcision involves removing more of foreskin. So, the final scar would be more near the middle of the shaft of the penis.

A low circumcision involves the removal of less of foreskin. Hence the final scar would be more near the tip of the penis.

Tight or Loose Circumcision

The amount of foreskin removed determines how tight the remaining skin on the shaft will be.

A tight circumcision involves removing more of foreskin. So, skin left behind on the shaft would become tighter. Tight circumcisions can no doubt be uncomfortable. As it affects the skins’ elasticity.

In a loose circumcision, on the other hand, you remove a lesser amount of foreskin.

What Should You Prefer?

Benefits and Risks

With looser and low circumcision, there is considerably more foreskin. Those in favor of loose circumcision say that there is more skin to allow free movement of the penis. And the penis can eventually ‘grow’ into the skin.

However, there is an increased risk of adhesion formation as there is freer skin. In severe cases, circumcision may need to be done again.

Bacteria and debris can get stuck as there is comparatively more skin present. Hence, you need to take more care of hygiene.

There is less skin left behind in high and tight circumcision. It may not be an issue at the moment. But as the infant grows, he may encounter problems.

One such problem is phimosis. A condition in which the foreskin becomes tight. And you are unable to retract it. Phimosis can present as pain, swelling, and cause problems in passing urine.
